Weather guy Loren Nancarrow leaving Ch. 10 News Team
May 20th, 2009 by Scott Marks

Channel 10 News weathercaster and environmental reporter Loren Nancarrow is walking away from the green screen and hanging up his clicker. The weatherman with the sunny forecasts and cloudless disposition is calling it quits after three decades as a staple of San Diego news.
In the eyes of Facebook, Loren and I are friends. He posted his social networking sendoff “Goodbye from the weather guy” early Tuesday evening. A few hours later, I noticed that friend Nancarrow was available to chat. He asked that Culture Cruncher not run anything until after Wednesday’s newscast. In order to avoid taking anything away from Carol LeBeau’s departure, he made an agreement with the station not to discuss it.
What better job is there than being a weatherperson in San Diego? Wine taster? Restaurant critic? Professional sperm donor? Vin Diesel’s barber?
I caught up with Nancarrow while he was feasting on an “end of ratings spaghetti dinner.” “I’ve been at (KGTV) for eleven years and before that two stints of eight years each at Ch. 8,” Nancarrow’s IM read. “The first eight years as an anchor, and then I left for San Francisco for a few years and came back as a weather geek.”
It’s not too late to plead temporary insanity. Is Nancarrow 100% certain that he wants to give up this plum position? “No I’m not sure at all,” he wrote back, “but the environment, nature and organic gardening are the subjects which really have kept me interested. The weather’s great, but it is SD. The other topics kept me a bit more challenged. The new folks believe my value is greatest focusing on the weather exclusively which would take me out of the conversation at a time when its getting so interesting.”
Given our weatherless climate, Nancarrow achieved the impossible by actually making his San Diego weathercasts interesting. He took what in the hands of many is a Xeroxed nightly report and infused it with his infectious passion for nature and the environment. “During the months of time when San Diego weather rarely changes day to day,” he wrote on his Facebook page, “it’s been nice to have the additional subject matter to keep things interesting for me, and hopefully you.”
Recently, a change occurred in Nancarrow’s weather slot. The tannest weatherman in town was suddenly broadcasting with a roof over his head. He told Culture Cruncher, “I have done them outdoors for almost 20 years, but with the recent management change, they decided I was more valuable indoors in front of a green screen.”
Nancarrow has decided to launch a second career and focus all his energy “on those things where my passion lies.” He notes, “The most pressing environmental need is for water conservation, and to that end I am starting a company which will take advantage of technological advances in how we irrigate our lawns and gardens.” Loren has no intention of leaving town. An expert gardener, Nancarrow hopes to launch the organic gardening show “Garden Rx” over the San Diego airwaves soon.
Those of you addicted to his Field Notes will soon have to bookmark www.lorennancarrow.com. (It’s not up, yet. Watch the skies!) “The blog itself is the station’s intellectual property since it was all written while under contract,” he said, “so its up to them to decide what will become of it. The tips that are in the Loren’s Field Notes section of the web site are mine and copyrighted in my books, so they’ll end up on my web site when I get it up.”
The weather won’t be the same in San Diego without Loren Nancarrow. I mean, the weather will always be the same…
“Yes,” he cut me off, “and therein lies my frustration.

Loren
I have enjoyed your weather and environmental (and surf!)reports over the past several years. When I was away in Afghanistan and Kosovo the reports over the internet made me feel a bit closer to home! Thank you and good luck in the future!
Dave Kissinger
I’ll pass this on to Loren, Dave. Thanks!
Loren: So sorry about your leaving channel 10. We have always enjoyed listening to you and your wonderful reports. We will miss you. We had a meal in a Carrow’s restaurant not long ago and I was reading about how it started. Are you related to the man, last name Nancarrow, who started it? We hope you will be able to answer this note. Thanks again for many great years!
Joanne and Dick Noble
I just sent Loren a copy of you note, Joanne. Thanks!
Loren,
We watched channel 10 every night - because of you. Always love your interesting and educational tidbits. After all, we could get the weather looking out the window. We look forward to following you, and benefiting from your endless knowledge, through your new web-site and Garden RX. We certainly wish you the best of luck, and will miss seeing you each evening. You made our day!
And thanks to you, too, Bill and Donna. Your tidings have been passed on.
I have watched Channel 10 not for the weather but for your ancillary comments and gardening suggestions. You could be right or wrong on the weather but somehow it didn’t matter. Your backdrop was always nice to see. You made San Diego weather reports interesting. I must say I miss seeing you. I will not be watching Channel 10 news again. I will look for your new program.
You, Carol, and Lisa Lake (on Ch. 10) all my favs. Now I don’t watch either channel.
We miss you and hope to see you on some gardening show.
Take care and good luck on whatever you choose to do.
Loren Nancarrow is the reason I have been a loyal channel 10 viewer for many, many years. His interesting info and views on San Diego, her history, her climate, her flora and fauna, views on conservation and habitat command the loyalty of many friends. Now that I know that neither Loren nor Carol will grace that show, I won’t be watching it in the future. What a loss!
I was so disappointed to learn Loren had left.
No fanfare for such a great reporter? Shame on channel 10. It was so refreshing to have someone take you places and discuss so many interesting things about our envirenment.
We’ve watched channel 10 for years, but now with Loren and Carol gone it’s no fun. So we’re trying out other options.
We wish Loren the best and hope to see him soon where he will be appreciated for the great reporting and informative issues he imparts with such grace.
Boy reading thru these, I feel the same, with Carol gone and now you…when they let LeeAnn Kim go I was disappointed and now watch other channels on the weekends but now I find myself changeing the channel on weekdays as well. 10news was great but it was you and Carol that made weeknight news somethng I wanted to watch, I love your tips…I hope you have great success with every new venture and look forward to your web site!
This past year we have all seen major changes at Channel 10 which my wife and I feel are no longer in our best interest as long time loyal viewers. The chemistry of the morning show with Bill, Lisa and James was incredible. The lose of James and Lisa have caused a sub par news cast. The evening news with Carol was also enjoyable. Now we learn that Loren is no longer on the show. For us this was the last straw. We have switched our news to another local network. What a shame to lose such great people that we all trusted and welcomed with open arms into our homes everyday.
Loren,
You have always been the reason we watched Channel 10. Not for the weather-that hardly ever changes, but for you tales and tips on gardening. Many of the things we now do in our yard and garden are things you have taught us. You made the chore of the gardens so much more fun and our yard is beautiful thanks to all of your education. The weather segment is no longer fun and we now flip the channel at the end of the news. I have a weather link on my computer and get an e-mail that tells me the weather for a week at a time. I no longer need to watch that on TV. When you were missing from Channel 10, we thought you were on vacation. Tonight my husband suggested I Google your name. We are so sad that you are no longer in our family room with us each evening. We wish you well in whatever you choose to pursue; You certainly deserve it.

Dear Lauren…
I KNEW something was up while watching the new advertisement for the evening Channel 10 news…where were you? I’ve been out of town for a few months…what a GREAT LOSS…you were the reason I watched 10 at night…you had the final say on what “really would happen with the weather”…and all your environmental & garden advise….I met you in person once, so kind & gentle…with that great smile!!! I will miss you…a great fan, Shraddha

Uhh…Maryam, Loren has nothing to do with my blog. This is an article about him. Befriend him if you are on Facebook. That’s how I found him.
