First look at BEASTLY starring Vanessa Hudgens & Alex Pettyfer

Alex Pettyfer in “Beastly”

This is not the type of movie that EC normally endorses, but a publicist friend asked if I would help start the hype-wagon rolling and if you knew Nahir, you’d write about it too.

Honestly, I need a remake of “Beauty and the Beast” like I need a head in my hole. As much as I enjoyed looking at those scandalous views of Vanessa Hudgens that surfaced last year, in this case I’ll take Cocteau over camel toe.

Here’s the official word: “Kyle Kingson has it all - looks, intelligence, wealth and opportunity - and a wicked cruel streak. Prone to mocking and humiliating “aggressively unattractive” classmates, he zeroes in on Goth classmate Kendra, inviting her to the school’s extravagant environmental bash. Kendra accepts, and, true to form, Kyle blows her off in a particularly savage fashion. She retaliates by casting a spell that physically transforms him into everything he despises. Enraged by his horrible and unrecognizable appearance he confronts Kendra and learns that the only solution to the curse is to find someone that will love him as he is - a task he considers impossible. Repulsed by his appearance, Kyle’s callous father banishes him to Brooklyn with a sympathetic housekeeper and blind tutor. As Kyle ponders how to overcome the curse and get his old life back, he chances upon a drug addict in the act of killing a threatening dealer. Seizing the opportunity, Kyle promises the addict freedom and safety for his daughter, Lindy if she will consent to live in Kyle’s Brooklyn home. Thus begins Kyle’s journey to discover true love in this hyper-modern retelling of the classic ‘Beauty and the Beast’ story. ”

Looks more like a West Hollywood petit four.

Let’s pray that Daniel Barnz’s direction doesn’t parrot the film’s title.

KPBS Film Club reviews “Bright Star,” “Coco Before Chanel,” “24 City” & “Whip It”

Jane Campion

This month we cover the four aforementioned titles as well as an interview with the LA Times’ Patrick Goldstein concerning the Roman Polanski arrest. Sure wish our producer would have let us chime in, but we were asked not to pose any questions that involved an opinion. (I feel like Roy Leonard at WGN.) As soon as he hung up, Beth and I chimed in.

We also mentioned the “Paranormal Activity” eBuzz. There will be 3 midnight screening this weekend at AMC Mission Valley.

In both my EC review and this morning’s Film Club, I forgot to mention my favorite scene in “Bright Star.” Here is a clip from it:
