Marilyn Monroe: Vintage Newspaper Front Pages and Articles from the Month She Died

September 5th, 2008 by Scott Marks

The exalted Prof. Herbert Ross, Esq. decided to put his rare collection of vintage MM newspapers up on eBay. Before they hit the electronic auction block, I took the time to scan these rare historical artifacts for your viewing pleasure. Eight of the papers are The New York Daily News (New York’s Picture Newspaper) and date between August 6 and August 18, 1962.  There is also the front page of The National Insider from April 28, 1963.

Not a big MM conspiracy theorist, I was fascinated by these tabloids, particularly the importance placed on a certain mysterious Mexican screenwriter named Jose Bolanos. (Looks like the illegitimate son of Ed Sullivan and Frank Sinatra.) At the time, Senor Bolanos was being sought as the last person to speak to Marilyn before she o.d.’d. Thank God that professional slimeball/Camelot wannabe/Rat Pack reject Peter Lawford stepped up to set the record straight.

Son of Photos from Jerry Lewis’ THE NUTTY PROFESSOR (1963)

August 30th, 2008 by Scott Marks

Jerry Lewis, September 1, 2008 at 6:01 p.m. Las Vegas time

It’s Telethon Weekend and mein schatz puppe Lilo over at The Celebrity City was thoughtful enough to send an additional 17 Nutty Professor stills our way. That brings this year’s marvelous final tote to 8 Lobby Cards, 19 Color Stills, 14 Black-And-Whites and 3 Vintage Ads. That’s one still more than I raised last year.

Confetti! Timpani! Oh, Yeah!

Photos from Jerry Lewis’ THE NUTTY PROFESSOR (1963)

August 26th, 2008 by Scott Marks

In honor of Telethon Weekend (and because a large chunk of tomorrow’s KPBS Film Club will be devoted to Jerry), the time was right to stock The Nutty Professor pond with fresh stills. Wait until you see the orgasmic Technicolor on some of these babies. These 8 x 10’s have been with me for almost as long as I can remember. The color ones were all purchased in 1977 when I took a road trip to Hollywood. I cleaned out everything Larry Edmunds and Eddie Brandt’s had in stock.

The pictures (and lobby card set, vintage ads and a NP contest form) can all be found here. I’d love to show you my French and Italian one sheets, but my scanner is too small, actually.

Rick Saphire gives EC the gift of Jerry Lewis

August 24th, 2008 by Scott Marks

The problem with being a schmuck is that eventually it will come back and bite you in the ass.

Several months ago I ran a story that accused Jerry Lewis’ publicist Rick Saphire of attaching a $20,000 price tag to one-on-one interviews with his legendary client. I also took a few cheap shots at Rick and several of the other celebrities he represents.

Not only did the story prove to be bogus, Rick turned out to be a very nice guy. We have since patched things up and become pallys. Rick sent me this terrific photo that he calls, “Jerry’s very first professional picture. It was not taken in a studio, but he did use it to promote his record act and to sign to fans. My guess it was taken between 1941-1943.”

OH, YEAH! TIMPANI!

Unfortunately, Rick won’t be in Vegas for this year’s Extra Special Special: “I will not be at the Telethon this year. I’ll be in Los Angeles with Gary Lewis who has elected to forgo the show this year. We leave on Labor Day from L.A., for a two week tour of the Philippines with Gary Lewis and the Playboys.” When Rick returns, I’ll sit him down for an interview. Something tells me this guy has more stories than the Sears Tower.

In the future, EC will continue to harpoon Minnie Pearl, Ruby Dee, Selma Diamond, Hitchcock’s Topaz and Opal Winfrey, but never JL’s publicist. As far as we’re concerned, Rick Saphire is a gem!

“The Adventures of Jerry Lewis” Comic Book No. 112

August 16th, 2008 by Scott Marks

While hastening to find suitable reading material for the bowl, I happened across my copy of The Adventures of Jerry Lewis , No. 112. This panel hit me harder than a case of Swiss Kriss.

Fill in your own smarmy joke. And they think today’s youth is being raised on filth. Makes one want to seriously reconsider this entry.

BTW, gov, are those an overflowing pair of A-1 Slacks that Jerry is removing from his Aryan pally? OH, YEAH!
