Another Dean & Jerry break up!
May 17th, 2009 by Scott Marks

This whole Jerry Lewis vs. Dean Richards brouhaha has resulted in some particularly lively feedback. It all started here. Jerry appeared in St. Charles, IL. In a radio interview, Jerry promised to give WGN radio’s Dean Richards an interview when he appeared in town and the chance to introduce him. What Buddy Love did to Les Brown, Jerry did to Dean. He snubbed him.
Dean went on the air and after berating Jerry, slammed his one man show.
Many were quick to come to Dean’s defense. Brian claimed that were it not for Dean, the turnout would have been much lower. A gentleman named Eli who, attended the show, concurred: “The theater’s owner appeared on stage to thank the audience for attending and Dean Richards for selling most of the tickets through his mentions on TV and radio.”
Others agreed with Ada who wrote, “Dean Richards should have sucked it up, given Jerry the benefit of the doubt, and moved on without making a big deal about it.” Perhaps a Mr. A. Johnson summed it up best: “This guy Richards is a hosebag.” He went on to refer to those who don’t follow the spoor of Mr. Lewis as “mediocre s*** stains.”
Eli seemed to be Dean’s biggest defender. He pointed up an obvious incongruity by referring to Richards as “Chicago’s long-time host of the MDA Telethon.” I will admit to being a bit surprised that the MDA connection didn’t help to seal the deal. No matter what I think of him as a radio and TV personality, he puts his money where his mouth is when it comes to the Telethon.
He wrote: “For two weeks, Dean talks about this on TV and radio, about how excited he is to introduce the legend and that tickets are available at blah-blah-blah. Dean gets there with audience members, including myself, high-fiving him and wishing him luck with the intro. Dean is told that Jerry wants no intro and no TV interview, with no explanation. Dean explains what happened on the air, dares to review the show (which I happened to agree with), and it’s his fault. Sorry guys. Jerry was in the wrong. If he canceled his TV interview because he wasn’t feeling well, that’s one thing. But to cancel a lousy intro? He didn’t even have the courtesy offer an explanation for anything. But he didn’t have to because he’s Jerry Lewis… and Jerry gets to shit on whoever he wants. And why not? He’s been doing it to people for decades. Jerry was a brilliant comedian and director but his word isn’t worth much.
I went to the show hoping to at least see some classic bits. I got a kick out of seeing the movie clips with him in the same room. I enjoyed his bumping his trumpet into the mic and spitting his “teeth” out. I enjoyed the Q&A with the audience, although it was obvious he was bothered by the Jerry impersonator. His singing was horrendous so it turned out to be a good thing that the orchestra drowned him out. What I didn’t go to see Jerry for was a string of lame Polack and fag jokes. I gave him the benefit of the doubt after he apologized for his fag joke on the telethon a couple years ago. So much for that.
And Scott, with all due respect, please don’t pretend that your stating “Perhaps the openly gay Richards was letting off some residual steam over the recent spate of ‘fag’ jokes Jerry dispensed” and referring to Dean as a “prom girl” wasn’t meant as a cheap shot.
I love Jerry’s work. The man, not so much.”
Of course it was a cheap shot. In my initial feedback I openly refer to it as a “mean-spirited” comment. It was not, however, homophobic. I was only bouncing off what God had given me to work with. Listen to the tape of Dean’s tirade. He refers to himself as a “prom queen.” I would never put that in print unless it came directly from the horse. I also said the he went off “half-cocked.” Does that add to my aura of homophobia? You are giving me way too much credit for being that bold (or creative).
