KPBS Film Club reviews “Inglourious Basterds,” “Yoo-Hoo, Mrs. Goldberg,” “Thirst,” “Taking Woodstock”

Quentin Tarantino and his cast on the set of “Inglourious Basterds”

Before you jump down my throat, I did make one error on today’s show. No, I wasn’t wrong for slamming “Taking Woodstock.” During our review of “Yoo Hoo, Mrs. Goldberg,” I erroneously stated that the two actors that played Amos & Andy were black. I meant to say they were Swedish.

Aside from that, all was well. Enjoy as Beth and I actually agree on all four films! Must be the heat.

KPBS Film Club reviews CHE, THE SECRETS, THE CLASS and talks about Jerry Lewis, The Academy Awards and 3D

February 26th, 2009 by Scott Marks

The Secrets

This was Maureen Cavanaugh’s first full blown episode as Film Club referee and when it was over she had a dazed look in her eyes as she proclaimed, “That was fun!” Honestly, I thought 4 plus hours of Che would have sent her packing, but this gal’s a trooper!

We spend the first 15 minutes giving Oscar a colonic. Jerry’s name comes up, but if I’m in the room Jerry’s name always comes up. It’s marvelous.

I received a lot of positive feedback concerning our discussion of The Class, a film I personally can’t stand. Our producer, the aerodynamic Angela “Leslie” Carone, was pleased with the way Beth and I argued our differing interpretations of visual storytelling. Always like to please Angela!

The biggest delight of the week is the Israeli film The Secrets. This pictured stirred up thoughts that I haven’t had since Hebrew School. I stayed up far too late last night reading up on the Kabbalah and Tikun Olam. Don’t worry. You don’t have to be Jewish to enjoy The Secrets.
