Merv Griffin: Sex Addict

Frank, Duke, Dr. Baruch S. Blumberg and Merv in a photo definitely not taken at one of Liberace’s all-male orgies.
Recently, EC raked sleazeball biographer Darwin Porter over the coals for outing Paul Newman from the grave. I went from being pissed over his Newman bio to pissing my pants when I read excerpts in The National Enquirer from Merv Griffin: A Life in the Closet.
Brace yourself: Merv had an affair with Sinatra dartboard/Kennedy wannabe Peter Lawford?!?!? If you listen hard enough you can hear Mrs. Miller laughing.
I know what you’re thinking: Why is it wrong to out Newman and hilarious to read a list of Merv’s sexual conquests? Paul Newman lived his life as far out of the spotlight as possible. Merv was an attention grabbing camera whore. Even when it’s someone I hate, part of me feels sorry for celebrity kids and spouses who learn of buried family secrets while the whole world listens in. I’m certain that Merv’s son Tony Griffin knew that his old man was gay. And Newman had the good taste not to hit on that salt-and-pepper putz Peter Lawford.
Everybody knew that Merv was gay! When SCTV staged their satiric assault against Merv’s talk show they basically came right out and said Merv and Liberace had a thing going on. Either the writers at SCTV had an inside source or they were clairvoyant, for according to Porter’s tell-all Merv and Libby were an item. The book alleges “Merv was a regular at the all-male orgies staged by his best friend and lover Liberace in Palm Springs.”
It doesn’t stop there. Merv also dated and baited Rock Hudson, Marlon Brando (serves him right for outing Newman to Porter), Roddy McDowall, Monty Clift, Gordon Scott (TV’s Tarzan) and James Dean. (I want to read a book that lists the names of the actors Dean didn’t sleep with!) One might only imagine Merv bending Dean over a chair while the actor screamed “YOU’RE TEARING ME APART!”

May 14th, 2009 by Scott Marks

You would figure that by now news that a Hollywood actor had a secret sex life would hardy be worth a mention, but when it’s Marlon Brando outing Paul Newman heads are sure to turn.
The Globe is reporting that a sensational new biography of Paul Newman reveals that Marlon Brando claims, “He never fooled me. Paul Newman had just as many on-location affairs as the rest of us, and he was just as bisexual as I was. But, where I was always getting caught with my pants down, he managed to do it in the dark.” Brando was interviewed in 2004 and it sounds like the actor was jealous of Newman’s ability to keep a lid on his private life.
Paul Newman: The Man Behind the Baby Blues is the work of Darwin Porter, a man Cinematical calls “a sexual detective ridiculously obsessed with Newman’s sex life.” Porter tells the Globe he has been following Newman’s various sexual liaisons since he met the actor in 1959. The book alleges that the actor, who was happily married to Joanne Woodward for 50 years, had affairs with Hollywood beauties like Grace Kelly, Judy Garland, Natalie Wood and Marilyn Monroe. If the book is accurate, Newman and Brando both had affairs with James Dean.
Not surpsisingly, the actor’s family has dismissed Porter’s book, stating the sex allegations are “disgusting.” Cinematical reports Ms. Woodward, “met Newman when he was married to another, and she was engaged to the then bisexual Gore Vidal. The trio even shared a house together for a while — not exactly the history that brings someone to find gayness their worst nightmare.”
Aside from authoring numerous travel guides, Porter has penned Hollywood Babylon: It’s Back and Hollywood’s Silent Closet in addition to books detailing the sex lives of Marlon Brando, Howard Hughes, Humphrey Bogart, Michael Jackson, Katherine Hepburn and Merv Griffin. He has also written extensively on Charles Darwin, but it’s unclear whether he outed the naturalist as a chimp lover.
As much as I love the tabloids, who cares? A source tells the Globe, “Paul knew there were rumors out there about his sexuality and to have to face them when he’s not here to dispute them is Joanne’s worst nightmare.” What Newman did in his bedroom should have no impact on his reputation as an actor. Porter is just another media whore trying to rape the bones of dead celebrities all in the name of the almighty buck.
