PALIN FOR PRESIDENT!

October 11th, 2008 by Scott Marks

Michael, not Sarah.

First a word on how Michael Palin’s campaign came to EC’s attention. Deviants attract. I first encountered S. Fitzstephens on Flckr and he’s been sending me some of the strangest links it’s ever been my pleasure to click open. Almost none of his emails have anything to do with movies, yet I still find myself fascinated. The first email contained three photos of Milton Berle at the Professional Children’s School, 1973.

Some of what he sends are links are to web pages, while others are photos with only a minimal amount of description like this one:

The subject line read: “i found this through mccain08 website.”

Most recently, Fitz sent news of another Palin running for office this November, former Monty Pythonite Michael Palin. He could be the most logical third party candidate since Pat Paulsen. The Palin party’s platform is listed below. Thanks for the hot links, Fitz. Keep ‘em coming!

Fellow Prisoners
(ooh what a giveaway!) …

The Silly Party continues to dominate in the debates.

Our strategy: victory by virtue of not being there.

Through the act of strategic absence,
Michael Palin
has rendered it
completely impossible
for the other candidates
to refute anything he says.
Genius!

Rating: ★★☆☆☆

A satiric sandbag aimed not at the Lord, but his overzealous parishioners. In this case, attacks were as inevitable as they were spurious. Pre-publicity clearly anticipated potential discord: “See the movie that’s controversial, sacrilegious, and blasphemous. But if that’s not playing, see Life of Brian.” The life of Brian Cohen and the Kid in the crèche next door (a child named Jesus) bear remarkable similarities. The affinity is so pronounced that Brian, like Christ, winds up nailed to a cross, this time to the sprightly strains of Always Look on the Bright Side of Life. The film was originally prohibited in Norway, didn’t hit Italian screens until 1991 and, according to author Dawn B. Sova, “as recently as July 2000, Ireland retained the film on its list of movies that are banned from exhibition.” We may all sleep better at night knowing that somewhere in the world people live in fear of art. Too bad the film isn’t funnier.
