Steve Martin adapts his novel about an average shopgirl who’s torn between a successful older businessman (Martin) and an appealing flake her own age (Jason Schwartzman). A bit dry and humorless in spots, the film does eventually elicit a tremendous amount of emotional honesty, particularly when it comes to Steve Martin’s character. Kudos to the radiant Claire Danes for actually convincing me that she was a plain-Jane department store clerk.
