Man kills himself while watching “Watchmen”

April 7th, 2009 by Scott Marks

Now that’s what I call a bad review!

The suicide took place during a screening in Eugene, Oregon sometime around midnight Monday morning. Audience members, there were approximately 10 in attendance, reported hearing a popping noise coming from the rear of the auditorium. A 24-year old man was found dead in the back of the Regal Cinema with a gunshot wound to his head.

There was no motive given for the shooting. Did the victim just break up with his girlfriend? Did the lab tests come back negative? Was he upset that the movie wasn’t following the comic book? Did the firing of Khloe Kardashian and T-Boz on last night’s Celebrity Apprentice prove too much for him?

It’s bad enough critics get wanded before screenings to make sure we’re not carrying recording devices. Something tells me incidents like this and the one in Philadelphia were a man was shot for talking during Benjamin Button will force theaters to install metal detectors.

Construction worker commits suicide at Mel Gibson’s Malibu home

A 48-year-old construction worker who worked in the movie business committed suicide at Mel Gibson’s Agoura Hills home near Malibu.

Law enforcement sources tell TMZ that Michael John Van Dyke hanged himself on one of the structures under construction on Mel’s property. His body was discovered early yesterday morning by the job site foreman.

At least Van Dyke isn’t a Jewish name.

One of Mel’s reps tells TMZ the actor feels “terrible” that someone committed suicide on his property. Mel has never lived in the house and has no current plans to move it. The home is less than a mile from The Holy family Catholic Church, founded by Mel. It’s where his daughter was married back in 2006.

Must be nice to have enough money to buy a home that you never plan to occupy.

It appears the Mel never met the victim, although Van Dyke has worked on a number of movies as a set construction foreman, including The Matrix Reloaded, Dr. Dolittle 2, Star Trek: Nemesis, and Karate Kid.

TMZ reports that Van Dyke was having intense financial problems after a messy, prolonged divorce a few years ago.
